Where did Nishane Perfumery Start Perfuming?
Despite the fact that Istanbul has been on the trade map for thousands of years, famed for spices, silk, and flowers (particularly roses), it’s amazing to think that until recently, the fine fragrances sold there were primarily made in France or Italy. With perfume connoisseurs seeking scents not only inspired by a wider range of cultures and smell memories, but also created by houses from those locales, Turkey’s niche perfume map was long overdue for a redrawing. Step forward two young men who went to university with different business plans but were drawn together on the same perfumed path.
Murat Katran, born in Istanbul, had explored his more artistic side and had a professional acting career in school, but graduated from Boaziçi University International Trade Department, then working as an export manager for Turkey’s largest steel mills. Murat’s career took him all over the world, where he dealt with large luxury companies before establishing his own company exporting steel products.
Now proceed to stage left: Murat Katran, born in Istanbul, had explored his more artistic side and had a professional acting career in school before graduating from Boaziçi University International Trade Department and working as an export manager for one of Turkey’s largest steel mills. Murat’s career took him all over the world, where he dealt with large luxury companies before establishing his own steel exporting company.
Despite the fact that they came to the world of fragrance in different ways, Mert and Murat had a meeting of minds in 2010. Their desire to showcase the wonders of their favorite city, as well as Turkey as a country intrinsically infused with a love of fragrance, led them to establish Nishane in 2012 and finally put a pin in that perfumed map.
Murat described how Nishane grew from this seedling concept. ‘As big niche perfume lovers, we always knew that there was no Turkish brand in that field,’ he says. ‘This was an excellent starting point for us to differentiate our brand and position ourselves as the first in our domestic market.’ And scent made perfect sense as a way to communicate ‘the city’s spirit; as the cradle of many civilizations,’ Murat continues proudly. Istanbul has deeply ingrained traditions as well as a modern vision and cosmopolitan structure.’

Nishane’s Nanshe is an amber floral fragrance for men and women. Nanshe was introduced in 2020. Cécile Zarokian is the perfumer behind this scent. Best Zenne perfume by Nishane
The lead characters of the traditional Turkish shadow play, popularized during the Ottoman period and then spread to most nation states that comprised the Ottoman Empire, most notably in Turkey and Greece, are KARAGOZ (meaning “black eye” in Turkish) and HACIVAT (shortened in time from “Hac vaz” meaning “vaz the Pilgrim”), ZENNE (the common name of the generally beautiful and flirty women featuring in various plays). Mert Güzel and Murat Katran, the creative directors, hoped to bring the legend of Karagoz and Hacivat into the modern world. The perfume trilogy was created in collaboration with perfumer Jorge Lee and was inspired by their playful characters.

Nishane’s Afrika Olifant is an Amber fragrance for men and women. Afrika Olifant debuted in 2015. Jorge Lee is the nose behind this fragrance.
