Oud Wood is a Tom Ford scent that opens softly with a blend of cardamom, rose, rich vanilla, earthy vetiver, and Szechuan pepper. After thirty minutes, the scent mainly consists of oud, cardamom, and rose, with camphor becoming more noticeable. The rose notes are counterbalanced by their cold undertones, and the nutty, aromatic, and sweet combination of oud and cardamom is unique. However, Oud Wood is less sweet and drier than the reformulated M7, and the scent could have been more sweet.
An unexpected scent is created around this time, resembling mocha ice cream. The earthy, rooty vetiver and nutty, sweet cardamom interact, creating a solid impression of mocha ice cream. Despite this, Oud Wood is not very deep or intricate, making it a simple scent to wear. The vetiver begins to show around two hours in, and the scent mainly consists of vetiver, cardamom, and oud, with the rose note growing dimmer. Sandalwood enters the scene at three hours, pushing the rose entirely off the stage and combining it with the earthy vetiver, vanilla, and cardamom. The perfume demonstrates its well-blended nature by varying and undulating.
Performance:
Oud Wood’s modest sillage and briefness have really surprised me. For a Tom Ford fragrance, the projection is surprisingly delicate and subdued. Surprisingly, it lasts an exceptionally short time on my skin—roughly 5.5 hours. I’m aware that my skin type is unusual, but I’m not the only one. Many people have commented on the fragrance’s mediocre (or, for a Tom Ford, incredibly below–average) projection, softness, and mildness in everything from the NST review to the comments on Fragrantica.
Many people have commented on Fragrantica about how Oud Wood just doesn’t last. (It’s enough to persuade someone that Tom Ford purposefully took M7 to the very opposite extreme of everything he did.)
Believe that Oud Wood is ideal for the office. It’s subtle enough not to offend many, but those who do detect it will find it genuinely appealing. If someone can detect it on you, it’s a praise monster. This is unfortunate because most of the comments you will receive will come in the first two hours, while the aroma is strong enough.
Oud Wood fragrance is sophisticated and would be ideal for more formal, dressed-up occasions with somber clothes.
The oud note is more appropriate for mild weather in the spring and fall because it lacks the sharpness and performance of a true cold-season fragrance.
Owing to its restricted projection, it might be suitable for summer use on exceptional occasions where you won’t be staying long.
