(Personal point of view:) It is disappointing, low-cost, and an exercise in banality. Guerlain’s new L’Homme Idéal isn’t the worst scent I’ve tasted this year by any means, but it is the worst I’ve smelled from Guerlain in a long time. It’s a subpar, manufactured construct with no distinguishing features or refinement.
Guerlain created the scent L’Homme Ideal in 2014. The first reinterpretation, L’Homme Ideal Cologne, was released in the spring of 2015 as an energizing and lighter version. The third flanker, L’Homme Idéal, has been described as more intense, sensual, and mysterious. It will be released in April 2016.
Thierry Wasser, Guerlain‘s in-house perfumer, collaborated with Delphine Jelk to create the new fragrance. The scent is woody-oriental, with an almond note layered with leather and Guerlinade vanilla. Bergamot, spices, and almonds make up the introductory notes. The heart contains Turkish rose, incense, and vanilla, while the base comprises sandalwood, leather, and tonka.

The first blast of odors is reminiscent of wintery smells like Dolce & Gabbana, The One, and Armani Code. However, it immediately establishes its own distinct individuality against a musky amber background.
Shortly after that, the musky amber transforms into a deep frankincense note that is sweet and reminiscent of licorice. This combines with rose notes to produce a more resinous floral background. Above it are intriguing almond notes, which bring out the mystery of amaretto harmony.
Finally, the amber heart produces some sweet and delicious tonka bean mixed with sandalwood and birch tar. This results in a highly gourmand and powdery base with a vanilla note.
However, birch tar is more nuanced and has a suede-like aroma.

Let it be known that I have an older bottle, as the images featured are of my exact bottle. It has painted black sides all around it. There has been speculation of reformulation with the newer silver label bottles, but I have not sniffed them. Guerlain has long excelled at making reformulations work.
L’Homme Idéal is an immersive fragrance that features seamless transitional notes between phases. You don’t feel the transitions between head, heart, and base, but rather a change of landscape that takes a few minutes to establish itself.
In terms of strength, L’Homme Idéal performs similarly to an Eau de parfum. Its projection is tight yet substantial, and the sillage is apparent from about a meter away.
Finally, the longevity is impressive, as you can detect the smell on clothes and yourself even after 24 hours. However, it provides approximately eight to nine hours of consistent performance.
Where and When?
Although it is a fall and winter fragrance with an oriental flavor, it is surprisingly wearable in the spring. I started wearing Guerlain L’homme Ideal in early May, and it’s not too heavy yet quite addictive.
However, I will likely quit in a week or so and switch to more seasonally suitable smells.
Regarding occasions, L’Homme Idéal is a perfume most suited for the evening. The flacon and its contents blend wonderfully with the orange sky of a setting sun. Meanwhile, it is pretty high-end and ideal for both romantic and formal situations. When dressed formally, Ideal Perfume emanates sensuality and elegance, which is a deadly mix with a tux.
Finally, Guerlain L’homme alternates between highly and mildly masculine styles. While it’s a strong fragrance with prominent musky overtones, it’s always sweet and relaxed. As a result, it’s an excellent choice for males who don’t want something too overwhelming.
