reviews:

“In a whirlpool of history and myth, a perfume dances between the ancient mysteries of the Minoan civilization and the delicacies of Mediterranean fruits. Inspired by the remains of a distant time, its fragrance winds like a golden thread through the fingers of an artist painting a timeless fresco.”

Astrophil & Stella

A poem from the 16th century inspires Astrophil & Stella‘s fragrances: Every night, a man named Astrophil gazes longingly at the starry sky and fantasizes about an endless, passionate love. Stella, a star that shines in the sky every night, falls from the sky one day to join Astrophil. When the star finally lands next to Astrophil, only their seductive scent unites them, and they fall madly in love.

The young label collaborates with perfumers worldwide for its Extrait de Parfum creations, including Luca Maffei, Cécile Zarokian, and Chris Maurice. The first fragrances will be available in 2020.

Overall, Sweet Pulp EDP is a fragrance that explores texture throughout. It’s fruity and sweet but not in a headache-inducing way; instead, it’s golden and glowing. To me, ‘pulp’ conjures up images of rotting fruit, sickly sweet and almost alcoholic, but Sweet Pulp falls short of that.

Astrophil & Stella has 13 perfumes in our fragrance collection. Astrophil & Stella is a brand-new fragrance. The first edition was released in 2020, and the most recent in 2023. Cécile Zarokian, Luca Maffei, Bertrand Duchaufour, Chris Maurice, Nathalie Feisthauer, Christian Provenzano, Arturetto Landi, and Miguel Mato collaborated on the Astrophil & Stella fragrances.

Notes:

The top notes are Pear, peach, blood orange, bergamot, and petitgrain.
Fig and rose are the middle notes.
The base notes are Patchouli, oak moss, vanilla, sandalwood, sugar, and ambergris.

The fragrance begins with a sweet pear lift reminiscent of pear drop sweets. This gradually transitions to a less definable “fruit.” Still, the texture of peach skin gradually emerges and begins the exploration of that fuzzy sort of texture that then runs throughout the scent. The citrus elements are more in the background, adding weight and an almost leathery impression to the scent. It doesn’t smell particularly leathery, but it has leather’s thick, pliable weightiness. Consider a leather made from fruit rinds that have been tightly pressed together.

The middle notes are listed as fig and rose. I felt the fig again as a texture, fuzzy with touches of green and a plump ripeness, but I didn’t smell the perfume and exclaim FIG! If you don’t like figs in scents, don’t be put off by their inclusion here; to me, it’s more of a building block and a textural reference than a full-fledged representation of the fruit itself. The rose is the same way. Rather than being overly floral, it adds a luscious, fleshy feel.

During this phase, the ambergris begins to make its presence known. It has salty, marine, almost tangy, crunchy, and crystalline flavors. I wasn’t expecting it to be as noticeable as it is, but it helps balance the sweetness of the other ingredients. The salty tang adds a bit of attitude and edge when paired with the softer fruits.

A zoomed-out view of Sweet Pulp in the middle would describe it as sweet, fruity, warm, almost golden in tone, with a fuzzy, persistent peach skin texture. The scent warms and sweetens as it wears, transitioning into the final phase of patchouli, oak moss, vanilla, sandalwood, sugar, and ambergris.

Sweet Pulp has been polished until it is gleaming in its final stages. The vanilla evokes the sweetness that began with the fruits, while the sandalwood acts as a smooth backdrop against everything else. The oakmoss adds weight and a powdery note, while the sugary sweetness complements the textural salt crystals of the ambergris that we discovered earlier. The image conjures up images of warm golden sunlight late at night; the golden hour.

Performance:

We have a big question to ask about Sweet Pulp by Astrophil and Stella! Considering its new release last year and quick warm welcome, even with its near-expensive price range, it has accepted sillage and longevity. But to what extent can we be sure about Sweet Pulp’s performance? What is its sillage and projectivity?

Not Anyone who has smelled Miguel’s previous fragrances will know that he prefers to create full-bodied, punchy fragrances. Scents with strong personalities burst forth from the skin in large quantities. Sweet Pulp‘s longevity is one of the claims made by the brand in their press kit, and it is a reasonable one. The scent lasts for many hours, at least on my skin, and the fragrance projects significantly from the skin.

The sillage is above average, leaving a noticeable trail in its wake. However, it is important to remember that individual experiences may vary depending on factors such as skin chemistry and application technique. It is always recommended to try a fragrance on your own skin before drawing any conclusions about its performance.

The longevity was fine with me. (nearly 8 hours strong, and it decreases over time.) Maybe I was thinking of a more long-lasting scent of this sweet scent, but I cannot recall it from Sweet Pulp‘s bad point. However, I found that it lasted for a decent amount of time on my skin.

Sweet Pulp accomplishes its goal. It does fruity, sweet, warm, and golden tones well. It provides Miguel Matos with a platform to expand his daring portfolio and surprises with ambergris touches. The longevity and projection are excellent, and Sweet Pulp will please those who prefer fragrances that last for hours. Furthermore, Sweet Pulp feels like a thoughtful addition to the Astrophil and Stella line, bringing a heavier fruitiness than any of their previous scents.
